In the previous article, we explored how Intent is the foundation of high-performing teams.

Leadership intent often lives inside people’s heads.

But unless that intent is translated into a system, it remains fragile.

Predictability begins when intent becomes structured, clear, and actionable.

The Need for Predictability

Most leaders genuinely want their teams to succeed.

Product managers genuinely want to ship good software.

And now, increasingly, AI agents are contributing across the SDLC.

Code is written faster, PRs are generated faster, and reviews are assisted or even automated.

Yet, many teams still experience:

  • inconsistent quality

  • slipping timelines

  • long review loops

  • test gaps and missed scenarios

  • unexpected issues after release

This is where the next leadership capability becomes important.

Predictability.

Predictability is what allows a team to say with confidence:

“We know what we are building, how it will be built, and what will be shipped.”

When this confidence is missing, the issue is often not capability, but a weak start to the SDLC.


Why SDLC Still Lacks Predictability (Even with AI)

At the start of a task, there are multiple interpretations:

  • what the client imagines

  • what the product manager understands

  • what the developer builds or prompts

  • what the agent generates

  • what the tech lead or AI reviews

  • what the QA system validates

And these are rarely identical.

Without a clear Definition of Done, each of these becomes its own version of reality.

Context Is Scattered Eeverywhere

Important context does exist, but it is fragmented across:

  • Product requirement documents

  • GitHub issues and sprint boards

  • Past tasks and implementations

  • Architecture documents

  • Meeting discussions and decisions

Someone has to gather all this information and convert it into a structured issue.

This step quietly becomes one of the most time-consuming parts of the SDLC.

And this is why, 9/10 startups don't maintain clear documentation of, what has been built, what is being planned, what was recently shipped and how it was implemented.

In conversations with CTOs and product leaders, a common concern comes up:

“This feels like an overhead. We don’t have enough time.”

So documentation gets skipped to save time upfront. But that time doesn’t disappear.

It shows up later in multiple review loops on every PR and, eventually, bugs in production.

Time saved in documentation is often time spent multiple times in execution.

Speed Without Clarity Amplifies the Problem

In many organizations, AI agents are already writing 90% or more of the code.

But with that speed comes a hidden cost.

When AI assistants generate code, PRs, and even reviews at high speed:

  • Misalignment spreads faster

  • Gaps become harder to detect

  • Tech debt accumulates silently

The Core Insight

This is why even high-performing teams feel unpredictable.

The Most Important Step in the SDLC: Definition of Done

The first and most important step of any SDLC that quietly determines how the rest of the project will unfold is documenting the issue clearly.

This is where the Definition of Done (DoD) begins.

A strong Definition of Done answers a few fundamental questions:

  • What exactly is the problem we are solving?

  • What should the final output look like?

  • How will it be developed?

  • What edge cases must be considered?

  • What are the dependencies?

  • What is unknown?

  • How will this be tested?

  • What should be covered in QA automation?

  • What must exist before this task is considered complete?

If this is unclear, the team may still move forward quickly. But that speed is often deceptive.

Because the missing clarity returns later in the form of:

  • rework

  • incomplete or misaligned test coverage

  • unreliable AI or human output - whether you code, test, review or debug

  • higher probability of production issues

  • audit findings


How We Approach This at Godspeed

While building products at Godspeed, we faced the same challenges. As a small team, we needed precision. At the same time, we were increasingly relying on AI across the SDLC; code generation, PR creation, review assistance, and test scaffolding.

This made one thing clear:

Even as a small team, this created a strong sense of control over delivery.

The improvement was because we reduced ambiguity at the start.

These are internal observations over the last few sprints, not controlled benchmarks.

Closing the Information Gap

When a task is documented with full context:

developers build with clarity

  • agents generate more accurate code

  • QA automation validates the right scenarios

  • review loops become shorter

  • gaps reduce before they reach production

The Definition of Done becomes a shared contract between humans, agents, and systems.

And when that happens, predictability emerges.

Because whether work is done by a developer or an agent, one question remains the same:

“Do we truly know what we are about to ship?”

A clear Definition of Done is where that confidence begins.

And once work becomes predictable, something new becomes possible.
